The 2-week count down to Africa
Where does the time go? I can’t believe it was a year ago, 7 of our team from Creations headed off to the Kwa-Kulu Natal region in South Africa to build a house for a lady called Esther and her 4 children.
When we first saw the site, I was shocked that all these people lived in this mud hut, with half a roof!! It wouldn’t have been suitable accommodation for a dog, let alone a family! But by the end of the 18 days we were able to hand over the keys to her… possibly one of the most emotional parts of the trip, believe me, there were many of those!
So where are we 1 year on? Esther and her family, despite having a 9 month drought, where by the lake and all the boreholes have dried up, and they have to walk nearly 2 hours every day to get water, are very happy and doing well.
We have been able to (with the funds raised) make sure that a school of 300 children have been fed every day, so they are mentally fit to be able to learn.
We have developed 2 allotments so the community can harvest the crops partly for themselves and partly to go to market with, so they can earn their own money.
…and we have inspired 2 more of our team, Michelle and Carla, to head back out on the 22nd October 2015 with 2 of the team who went last year, Holly and Claire, to carry on the great work under the support of The CoCo’s Foundation.
