How the Menopause can affect your hair

Struggling with Menopausal hair?

As if us ladies haven’t got enough to worry about when our bodies start to go into the Menopause stage, with hot flushes, and dealing with a huge change in hormones… one of the side effects can be hair loss or a change in the hair texture, and I can assure you they didn’t warn me of this one, and it is certainly not discussed as much.

So after doing a little research on this subject, and to try and help other women in the same situation, here are a few pointers.

In general, the hair condition and manageability will change, which is the most common side effect, you may also find you shed a bit more hair than usual, this is down to the decrease in oestrogen levels.

In some women (not all) you may find your hair thinning, if you find yourself going down the HRT route, do make your Doctor aware if you feel your hair is thinning as there are ‘hair-friendly’ forms of HRT.

So how do we take care of our Menopausal hair?

One great piece of advice is… wash your hair more regularly. By using a good quality shampoo and conditioner that actually feeds the hair with the nutrients it needs, will help improve the condition and the shine.

Pop in to have a consultation, one of our team will be able to chat to you about your concerns, it maybe that your hair is changing texture so a slight tweak in your style can help this. Also, having a little bit of colour can really lift the hair.

If you think your hair is thinning, we can also advise on hair extensions, these are tiny bonds that can help thicken up the hair in the places it needs. Hair extensions are certainly not just for those long wavy locks, but can really help with hair density.

And lastly consider your lifestyle! Minimising stress levels can have a huge benefit to your hair and scalp, and regular exercise can indirectly help, get your heart rate up and the blood pumping, which will give you more energy and a greater wellbeing.
