Africa – 7 Days Of Emotions.
I was always well aware that Africa would be an emotional experience. I greatly fear the unknown, new people and to be frank I’m a bit of a loner and I LOVE my own space! I expected this trip to be a real struggle for me and I worried that Emma, Trevor, Claire, Sophie, Holly and Elliot would have to support me.
I’m glad to say I was wrong, This trip continues to be a happy, eye opening and deeply emotional one. Today for example, we visited two schools. One to roll out our breakfast for 500 kids and the second to another school where the children performed songs for us. BOTH of these deeply emotional and incredible experience.
Most of these children do not eat from one day to the next and the area surrounding is already in drought despite it only being spring. I never expected the sight of children singing to reduce me to tears, but hearing them sing AND be so happy at school brought a tear to my eye.
The most upsetting part today was knowing that just 5p feeds a child. thats right 5p! i think nothing of buying my morning mocha at work but knowing that 52 children could be fed every day.
And then there is the relationships i have built with my friends on the trip. I am having something of a ‘bromance’ with Elliot who i really didn’t know 7 days ago. I am moved by Holly and Claires strength and ability to connect with children. Sophie has a delicate soul and children really connect with her.
Emma and Trevor are fabulous and Trev and I have become a ‘double act’ much to everyone’s horror! And Chris and Debs our leaders are the most inspirational and motivating gorgeous people.
All in all i have discovered that the people of Africa are friendly, respectful and gracious in accepting help. I feel this has been the BEST ever experience and i cant wait to do it again… and again!!
Stay Blessed, Gary.
