I recently read an article in the Guardian where one of the journalists had attended a conference aimed at 50+ aged women. After the event she was handed a goody bag. On opening and reading the contents she was horrified! Filled with anti-wrinkle cream, ageing vitamin suplements and membership to the National trust she instantly felt pre-judged.
In her words she was “In that funny space between not being young any longer but not properly old either”. I suspect this is a position many women in their 50’s and 60’s find themselves. This got me thinking about hairstyles for the 50+ and how much its changing. When I think if some of the worlds most beautiful and sexy women I think of Julianne Moore (54), Helen Mirren (69) and Jane fonda (77).
I personally feel that a lot of women reinvent themselves at 50, suddenly children have flown the nest, some have more sociable time and hopefully many of us have confidence in ourselves and our bodies. When you look at the media the best dressed awards are often being given to women like Jenifer Anisten, Angelina Jolie and Jenifer Lopez. These women are all in their mid to late 40’s and considered the world’s sexiest and most photographed women. What makes them stand out along with actresses such as Judi Dench and Joan Collins is a confidence in their image.
You can have a new choppy bob, stunning white hair and long silky locks BUT if you don’t partner them with the right confidence, styling and effort then you won’t shine like the sexy women you ARE. In my (crazy) head there are 3 types of women going into their 50s and 60’s.
One – Confidence Cougar
These clients don’t mind taking time on styling hair and are all about the shine, length and impact of their hair. Julianne Moore is the perfect example. At 54 she is breaking all the rules and is showing us why you don’t have to go shorter to look younger. She rocks a colour that is bold and brave but matches her skin tone perfectly. Make life easy with large rollers (or my favourite a large curling tong) to give height and movement – simply gorgeous!
Two – White Diamonds
I have a number of clients who use colour to enhance their natural colour. The white diamonds have embraced the sparkles and use style and layered cuts to shine! Helen Mirren and Lisa Maxwell are great example of this. Lisa blends her natural colour with high and low lights to give depth to fine hair whilst looking natural and Helen embraces her sparkles with style and clear gloss colour to add shine and health to the hair.
Three – Glamour (NOT GOLDEN) Girls
My favourite of the 3! Come on I mean Joan Collins, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jane Fonda! These women embrace age with glamour and big bold hair (even id its not always their own). Though colour and classic cuts these women stay sexy and stylish into their 70’s. Through our wig service we have many clients who order pieces just for nights out and cruises proving that you can look instantly more glam at any age.
So ladies embrace this time in your life and make good with what god has given you. Next time you wonder through the streets of your local town, see for yourself that its your generations bringing glamour to the high street.
