A few questions answered….

I have been using box colours on my hair at home for many years. My Hair often feels dry and brittle but i love the result get with the a box colour. I am thinking of changing my colour as im getting a little too old for the shade i am so i would like to go lighter. What advice can you give me on choosing the right box colour (cheeky i know) and improving its condition?

First of all we understand that the time and cost of colour is often an issue for our clients. Its for this reason we introduced express colour at Creations 2 years ago. In terms of colouring your hair at home there are a few tips we can give you. I asked some friends and clients who do use box colours what their top questions would be….
- How come my hair never comes out the same as the colour on the box?
This is often the case but you have to look at this colour with realistic expectations. The colour will often come out somewhere between your natural colour and the colour shown (often a little darker than you hoped for)
MOST IMPORTANTLY always follow the manufacturers instructions and skin test as suggested.
2. How can i go from dark brown to blonde?
With a home colour this is not really possible. when you take the hair from dark to light you reveal what we call an undertone which needs balancing. Im sure you have noticed when people try to lighten dark hair it often goes ginger/red and that’s why. As a rule if you are changing your colour by two or more shades you would have to seek professional salon help.
3. My colour always fades fast! what can i do to stop this?
This can often be the case with salon colours too if not cared for in the right way. Stay out of the sun or wear a hat when sat in direct sunlight. Vibrant colours such as reds fade faster. Always use a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner. This will help keep the colour at its best for a few weeks longer. If the condition of your hair is poor the colour slides out the hair faster, so condition is important to prevent fade.
4. Ive never used a home colour before but its much cheaper, would it affect the condition of my hair?
Honestly, probably not! Good homecare will help but the sulphates found in many box colours coat the hair and cause damage which over time will damage the condition. As a stylist there is ALWAYS a reason i recommend products to clients. Its NOT to make a sale but to ensure you get the BEST from the colour/cut we have created.
5. I would like to have Ombre on my hair, can i use a home bleach on my hair?
Yes you could. Ombre colour is beautiful on hair and is a great non committal colour. Home ombre kits can be used, however, positioning the colour and getting a gradual fade is near on impossible to do yourself. Im sure you have seen the odd girl with a sudden lighter band on her hair see picture at header). The in salon cost is relatively low for Ombre and as it requires no more colour at any great urgency it is relatively cost effective too.
