What a drama at the 2022 Oscars, where Will Smith slapped the face of the comedian Chris Rock! Although this is the most talked about subject in the news today, it has really highlighted the issues surrounding the condition alopecia, which is a serious condition that can have, not only the physical impact, but for a woman’s mental health, this can be such a terrifying time.
Jada Pinkett Smith first spoke about her experience with Alopecia in 2018, after loosing ‘handfuls’ of hair during her battle with this autoimmune disorder. I am sure you will agree with me, she really rocks her shaved head look, and is as beautiful as she has ever been.
I am sure, with the events from last night, this will help other people in the same situation. Suffering from Alopecia can really affect the individual on a much deeper level. Here are a few facts about Alopecia
What is the cause of Alopecia?
Alopecia Areata is the medical term for bald. Areata means patchy. This patchy baldness can develop anywhere on the body. There is also Alopecia Totalis. This is where the person loses all hair on the scalp, so the scalp is completely bald. It can be heredity, due to hormonal changes, stressful events or medical conditions that attach the immune system.
What are the symptoms of Alopecia?
The symptoms of Alopecia is gradual thinning of top of the head, this can be temporary or permanent. It is much more common in men. It can be a sudden loss of hair, which can start from a small bald patch.
Alopecia and Menopause
Hair loss during menopause is the results of a hormone imbalance. As you go through the menopause stage, the hormone Estrogen and Progesterone is lowered. These hormones help your hair grow faster and stayon the head for longer.
Is Alopecia caused by stress?
This can be one of the causes. There is usually a delay in a stressful event, around 3 months or so, before the hair starts to fall. Often, if stress causes Alopecia, it will more likely be temporary.
